2023.04.01 09:13 Sunethan Is it practical that I work at imec tower while living in Kessel-lo?
Hello everyone,
I'm a newcomer here (first travel abroad) and saw an apartment in Kessel-lo with an real estate agency yesterday.
Everything is nice - no communal spaces, no furniture, able to install a washing machine, independent wateelectricity/gas meter, level "A" EPC, 850 monthly rent and 40 for maintenance, 75m2 suitable for me and my wife,
but the distance to imec tower is 22mins with bike. I could take by bus to imec tower directly, but then the
10-ticket 17euro is pretty expensive to me.
Do you know anyone who lives in Kessel-lo and ride a bike to imec tower at least twice or three times a week? How does that feel? Would it make you hate this world? 🤣
I know this place is rainy most of time, but looking for rental studio/apartment is so exhausting. I'm hoping I could settle down as soon as possible, but I understand it is risky if I don't think it through. Otherwise, there may be some trouble ahead..
Thanks everyone for your kind help!

2023.04.01 08:51 kwhali Troubleshooting random failures?
This is a bit difficult to troubleshoot. My system randomly starts getting alzheimers.. This is usually after a few weeks uptime, plenty of disk space, free memory, no heavy load.
If I have a terminal open and try running a command like ls it says "command not found". Presumably I've lost access to the filesystem. As a result apps start crashing when they try to access disk I think, or completely freeze up and become unresponsive. Some are briefly usable due to this.
I lose any state that was not persisted to disk, such as unsaved work, or window placement in a desktop session.
If I have a terminal open with an SSH session to another machine, that seems to remain usable / functional. I cannot switch TTY successfully (presumably because that must attempt to access disk).
No logs after restart of course.
The system boots a raw img file (VM install) via Ventoy off a external USB SSD (Samsung T7). I can only assume that there was some I/O error? I haven't tried but perhaps the same behavior would happen if I disconnected the disk intentionally.
If so, I don't think it was any power saving feature, and the system should have plenty of power for the USB bus to keep it happy? I don't think it supports SMART due to the USB to NVMe / SATA bridge chipset, so I can't inspect anything there either.
I have seen logs with some error about the disk, but these are recovered from. Perhaps something else is causing the disconnect?
The closest reproduction I had (daily failure) was last year when I did heavy video conferencing and one app kept trying to sync a private repo it lacked access to so it spammed the journal every minute about that failure while open.
I understand the best route is probably to move the install to an internal disk and avoid the Ventoy image booting to verify that it's not due to either of those concerns.
Just curious if anyone might know what the alzheimers trigger might be? Thanks :)

2023.04.01 07:36 gobblox38 Drunk driver hits parked car in residential zone
| The owners of the parked car watched as a drunk driver turned the corner into their residential street. They saw the driver "tearing ass" around the corner, nearly hitting a parked car, before slamming into their parked vehicle. "We don't have insurance coverage to repair that old thing," the owner of the parked car said. "People speed down this street all the time," said another resident, "it's worse on Friday night because that's when drunk drivers are on the road." When I asked the police about a public statement, he said, "a dui is a misdemeanor, he'll sit in a drunk tank tonight and be released in the morning." All of this happened in a car dependent residential zone, with some walkability, in a Denver suburb. The punishment is so light because there are few viable transit options. RTD (Regional Transportation District, the bus and train company) has cut services in the area since the 2020 covid lockdown. Drunk driving is treated so lightly, even though property damage occurred, because this region is heavily dependent on personal vehicle transit. The family that watched their vehicle get smashed are now in a tight financial situation simply because their car is totalled. If we had decent mass transit, the legal system would have revoked the license on the drunk driver after his first dui. Yes, he is a repeat offender, as admitted to the police during his arrest. If we had decent mass transit, the owners of the parked car wouldn't be financially devastated because some other person was irresponsible. "Can I ask you a question?" another homeowner said to a police officer, "can you put a police station [at the corner]?" The cop chuckled and eventually went back to his business. Little did she know. Development patterns started since the post WW2 era had built a neighborhood where the very notion of a community police station was impractical. The members of the community, myself included, thanked the police officers on the scene for doing their jobs professionally and with respect to everyone. By the look in the patrolman's face, I could tell that he was disgusted that an obvious threat to the wellbeing of the community would be treated so lightly. In everyone's mind, the suspect, if convinced of intoxicated driving, should not be trusted to drive. We once again come face to face with the underlying problem. If this person loses the privilege of driving a private motor vehicle, he is in economic ruin. If he's lucky, he has employment and housing near a bus stop. If he invests in a bicycle, he could take bike routes (to varying degrees of safety) to various bus/ rail stations. The odds are low on the latter due to the stigma of car brained society pushing the of riding the bus or biking is a punishment). This is the community I live in. This is the community I want to improve. This is why I want to end car dependency. I want drunk people to see the bus as a viable solution for getting home. I want to see a transit system so reliable that the notion of driving intoxicated is "fucking bonkers." I want the loss of a private motor vehicle, lost through the actions of a random person, not be a factor in the ability to earn an income. My views are considered extreme. 2023.04.01 07:22 cuberandgamer Is Plano getting their money's worth out of DART? Its complicated, but yes
Recently, I attended a Plano townhall at UT Dallas. Councilman Shelby Williams talked about, in great detail, how Plano was giving DART $100 million, and they only saw a fraction of that value returned by the services DART provided.
Shelby Williams is maybe not the most transit friendly councilman in Plano. He accused DART of wasting money running empty buses no one wants to use, and suggests that even Dallas is getting a poor return on investment from DART.
Matt Shaheen (represents West Plano in the state legislature) Ffiled a bill in the Texas state legislature that would require DART to provide service levels proportional to sales tax contribution by a member city. This would mean that, if you spend say, $80 million in sales tax to DART, DART would have to provide $80 Million worth of transit services. I want to show you all a comparison between Garland and Plano's bus network:
https://preview.redd.it/unc5bjxhz6ra1.png?width=536&format=png&auto=webp&s=db26bcdd1f0d2104658d8c40b51dba499def051d As you can see, Garland has a fairly comprehensive fixed route bus service, though the buses are not very frequent for the most part. Keep in mind, some of these routes are also serving Richardson and Dallas, not all of those bus miles are being driven in Garland.
Lets take a look at Plano
https://preview.redd.it/rpf2udytz6ra1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=99f7f240880ebe9cf11936cd437b81fbcdcce201 I bring this up because I think this demonstrates where Plano is coming from. Sure, we don't know the costs of these services, but at a glance of the map you can maybe see how Plano might actually be getting less investment from DART than a city like Garland despite spending more money on DART services. GoLink works well for Plano though, and GoLink requires a higher subsidy per passenger trip than fixed route service.
Now, here are those numbers I was talking about, what DART calculates they spend in each member city:
https://preview.redd.it/batwgsl0z6ra1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=929a5b87df140132a3ca337512fefd947f1e2e27 Keep in mind, DART has other revenue services besides sales tax. Fares, advertising, and federal grants. That's why they spend more in the service area cities than they receive from them.
According to these numbers, if accurate, Plano was actually getting more out of DART than their sales tax could provide in 2019.
We also can't ignore the fact that DART is spending billions to bring the silver line to Plano, or that DART will probably give Plano some pretty serious frequency improvements in phase two of their network redesign.
So, does DART need to fundamentally rethink their bus network and how they allocate resources so they can satisfy Plano? There's room for a lot of debate here, but if you ask me, I'd say no.
There are gaps and opportunities in Plano that DART should work to address. DART replaced many buses in Plano with GoLink service, but a lot of the bus routes they replaced had very limited service, or sometimes rush hour only service. It may be worth exploring giving some of the axed fixed route corridors in Plano a proper shot, with full weekend and 6am to midnight service. Some Golink zones could be added and expanded as well. So don't get me wrong, I would NOT be opposed to more DART service in Plano.
However, I believe that imposing restrictions on where costs should be allocated within the DART network, based on each member city's contribution, would be counterproductive. While this may seem like a logical approach, it could hinder DART's ability to effectively allocate resources to meet the transit needs of all member cities and their residents. When making a transit network, ideally you may want to focus on travel patterns, serving commutes, ridership, and making a network useful to their riders in Plano and other member cities. You probably wouldn't focus disaggregating cost by member city contribution because that would be a hinderance to the network. Making DART better for Plano residents or commuters sometimes requires improving the DART network outside of Plano.
How many of you would benefit from a new route or increased frequency on a route outside of the city you live in? My guess is, almost all of you can think of a few improvements to the network that would make your life better that exist outside of the city you live in. Everyone who uses the route 239 in Plano can potentially benefit from every route that serves the Addison transit center, even if that route serves some other city such as Carrolton.
The focus of DART staff shouldn't be "well in this geographical boundary, we need to spend x amount more resources here", it should be, "for our 13 member cities and their residents, lets provide the most access possible and serve their commutes as best as we can"

I don my yellow jumpsuit, I'm ready to start the day;
I don't take the bus route, I ride my motorcycle away.
I wasn't drawn with lead, And I'll keep my secrets hidden:
Deep down in the sewer, That all my best friends live in.
They're the dearest ones to me, Masters of their wicked arts;
We feel our hearts' love and grief, I would never ask to be apart.
My soul pours out with them in all this fighting hell: A scientist to break ins to Molina Tower;
I will always be there for you: Heroes in a half shell, Turtle Power.

2023.04.01 01:25 _Cacahuate_ Mystery illness, please help
About 10 years ago I developed a terrible anxiety/diarrhea problem where I would wake up every morning in the midst of a panic attack and immediately have to run to the bathroom. Everything I ate would come out of me in liquid form. Undigested food and all. This happened on and off for years. I lost weight, was in terrible shape and the doctor I was seeing only gave me Xanax and nothing else.
Fast forward to 5 years ago, the stomach issues and anxiety stopped, but then a few short months later I started to have upper back pain. Started as a back ache that gradually got worse and worse, it’s now all day every day, still my upper back , neck and shoulder, and nearly all my large joints and muscles ache all the time. Arms, legs, everything. My body is full of knots and I fatigue easily. I wake up feeling like I was hit by a bus. It’s like when you have the flu and it hurts just to breathe.
I’ve been to multiple doctors, they have tested for many things, they thought it was iron or vitamin D deficiency, so I supplemented and got iron infusions but to no avail. We also thought it was hormone related, so I went the GYN route and found out I had stage 3 endometriosis. Had surgery to remove it all, the rest of my body still continues to hurt constantly.
I recently took the GI360 test by doctors data and it showed high Candida and secretory IgA, which is apparently an inflammation marker. Still don’t know what is causing all of this inflammation. It’s slowly killing me and I don’t know what else to do. I just started taking grapefruit seed oil and candidase for the Candida. I also take probiotics, magnesium, turmeric, vitamin c, d3, B complex, and have many, many other supplements that I’ve tried over the years. I eat very healthy, gluten free and mainly plant-based. Very little dairy, no sugar. Currently I am on anti-candida diet. Bowel movements are regular and normal. No diarrhea. No bloating or stomach pain.
I believe that everything is interconnected and think this is all a result of the digestive troubles I had years ago. Now I am focused on ridding myself of Candida and rebalancing my micro biome but wondering if anyone here has heard of or experienced such symptoms. I am at a loss and feeling so defeated. Sometimes I feel I just can’t go on much longer.

2023.03.31 23:13 bucaro15 Why am I routed to US east - ASH, instead of US northeast - NWK?
So I live in NYC metro area and I have ultimate...it seems like NKW (newark?) has now a server that has 3080/4080. I have selected auto for server location and selected I want 4k resolution. I always get routed to ASH server (Which has 4k), but I am wondering why it wouldn't just send me to the closest server which should be NWK. I changed the region to US northeast and it gave me NWK 02 (1080p server) instead of NWK 04 which is the new one....how come? anything I need to do on my end? or am I destined to whatever they want, even if it's not the closest?
