2023.04.01 12:37 alanthecowboykill3r Advice needed on improving word count

I’m closing in on finishing the first draft of my first book where I have three character arcs, a couple of twists and a climactic ending and it looks like the word count will be just short of 50K. I feel like I have everything I need to make the story work but can’t seem to get the word count any higher and think it might be how I’m writing. An average scene (not chapter) is coming in at about 2000 words with some much less and wanted some advice on how to make scenes longer or what I could do to up the word count (more internal dialogue for example).
Below is a scene that comes in at 788 where we meet one of the main characters for the first time (Nisha) as she overhears some of the antagonist's plans:

It seemed to be about a posh lady having to pretend to be an even posher lady to fit in at a boat race but it was hard to make out over the noise of the kitchen. Somebody yelled at Nisha and she turned away from the TV.
'I can give this to someone else if you want, clearly you don’t need the tips,’ Chef said as he loomed over her in his whites. Speckled with food from a thousand dinners his jacket looked like an edible Jackson Pollock. Nisha was never sure if she should report the jacket to the council or frame it.
She looked at the ceiling. ‘No.'
'Pardon?'
'No Chef.’ Louder this time but still looking up.
'Good, take these.'
She held her breath as she pushed against the swing door that separated Chef’s fiefdom from the rest of the restaurant. She had done it hundreds of times but always expected someone to come the other way. She fixed her smile in the mirror before entering the private dining room. The room was filled with paraphernalia designed to soothe customers with a history that didn’t exist. Smiling sepoys, moustachioed white saviours delivering civilisation from the back of elephants, photos of English ladies in crisp linen teaching the gospel to willing ears.
The only table in the room could seat twenty but tonight only two seats were filled. A woman, facing the kitchen and wearing a bright red suit, and a man sat opposite, his clothes expensive but faded. A few years ago Nisha would have described him as old but now she would say early middle age. She was becoming all too aware that twenty-nine is a lot closer to forty than twenty-one.
'And then what happened?'
'I went down as far as his knuckle and he passed out from the pain.’ The woman's voice was slate, the result of a thousand years of breeding, it was designed to strike fear and respect into the population. The man laughed the laugh of someone who knew the other was buying dinner.
Crisp poppadoms were placed between them and Nisha poured them each a glass of pinot noir. She chanced a smile at the man who didn’t so much as look through her as fail to comprehend her existence. So much for the tips.
'Even if the food isn’t great at least you don’t have to worry about being overheard in a place like this.'

A bag of potatoes was dropped in her arms and Chef turned without waiting for a reply.
'Yes Chef.’
She thought of Chef as she peeled. The posh lady pretending to be a posher lady seemed to be involved in the race now, but Nisha had missed why.

The woman in red ran her finger around the rim of her glass as the man spoke.
'It if does what you say it does…’
Nisha approached with two plates of chicken tikka. The woman flicked her wrist and the man continued. 'Then it will just be a case of finding what triggers it in the body, stomach enzymes for example, and distilling it.'
Nisha topped up their glasses with more wine.
‘I’m glad you’re confident. We have a lot of tissue but I would hate to waste any.’
Nisha spooned steaming rice onto their plates and turned to leave. A hand grabbed her wrist, the woman leaned in and stared. 'Leave the rice.’ Nisha feigned confusion, gave a deep nod and placed the rice on the table with a smile.

She had fallen off the boat. Someone, maybe a friend, was trying to help her get back on board by lowering an oar. Nisha lent against the door frame leading to the alley and felt the warm night air on her back.
'Nisha! I swear to God do some work,'
'Yes Chef.'
She lost her grip and fell back in. Nisha smiled.

Plates hot from the heat lamp burned her hands as she passed into the dining room for the final time. She placed their creme brûlées in front of them and rubbed the heat from her hand onto her skirt while she poured the last of the wine.
'What will you do once you have all that power?' Nisha waited until they had ignored her the correct amount of time to show there was nothing else they needed before backing away.
'I think the issue with it at the moment is it’s spreading everything equally, like most things it needs some discipline, some direction. If we could focus it to benefit a few people, or a person it would be much better.'
'Then everyone would benefit by extension. Rising tides and all that,’ the man said as Nisha stood by the kitchen doors and listened.

FuckCarscirclejerk is a bunch of pro-suburb trucktards, people who burn oil just for fun. I read through some of their posts. To save you some time, it's basically a bunch of manifestos for ruining the planet and resisting any form of progress or intentionally ruining cities just to spite us.
The mods are oppressive. Their wives have boyfriends, who also have girlfriends. They advocate for mass tire slashing, probably to discredit us. If you comment any kind of serious reasoning, you get downvoted into oblivion. They seem to believe there are cars in Amsterdam. Stupidest shit I've ever seen.
I'm really concerned because Reddit isn't quarantining them even though they regularly post for the complete destruction of all cities in order to replace them with "Dakha" which is some kind of post-apocalyptic social structure where people live in squalor.
If you try to point out the truth about their posts, cue dowvnotes. If you try to make a sane post, you're blocked by the automod for not having comment karma. You try to get comment karma by copy-pasting other upvoted comments and the mods (which are obviously bots) remove your comments and accuse you of being violent.
I'm writing to Reddit support to get this community banned before they mint the next Ted Kaczynski.

"It's a dog-eat-baby world."
On June 22nd, 2022, three of the greatest philosophers of our age asked one, simple question. What if Giorno Giovanna from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Vento Aureo used his stand Gold Experience to create only babies and pitbulls through the entire plot? The result is the most fucked up hypothetical plotline for Part 5 that I've ever seen, viewable in its entirety here. I highly recommend watching it in full before viewing this thread, as it's a frankly insane experience to listen to for the first time.

2023.04.01 12:32 virat_raj The Importance of a Well-Crafted Welcome Kit for New Employees

Starting a new job can be overwhelming, with new responsibilities, new coworkers, and a new environment to navigate. A well-crafted welcome kit can help ease this transition and provide new employees with the information and tools they need to feel confident and prepared for their new role.

What is a Welcome Kit?

A welcome kit for employees is a collection of resources and information provided to new employees upon starting a new job. It typically includes a range of materials, such as:

Why is a Welcome Kit Important?

A well-crafted welcome kit as a corporate gift hamper can have a significant impact on new employees' experience in their new roles. Here are some key reasons why:

Helps New Employees Feel Valued and Welcomed

Starting a new job can be an anxiety-inducing experience, and a thoughtful welcome kit can help new employees feel more at ease. By providing information about the company's culture, values, and history, a welcome kit can help new employees feel like they are part of something larger than themselves. A welcome letter from the CEO or other senior leaders can also help new employees feel valued and appreciated, as it shows that the company is invested in their success.

Provides Key Information and Resources

A well-crafted welcome kit can help new employees get up to speed quickly by providing them with the information and resources they need to succeed in their new roles. For example, a map of the office or campus can help new employees navigate their new surroundings, while a list of key contacts can help them know who to reach out to for support or guidance. An employee handbook or manual can also be an invaluable resource, as it outlines the company's policies, procedures, and expectations.

Builds a Sense of Community

A welcome kit can also help new employees feel like they are part of a larger community of colleagues. By providing company-branded merchandise, such as a t-shirt or water bottle, new employees can feel like they are part of the team. This can be especially important for remote employees who may not have the opportunity to meet their colleagues in person right away.

Sets the Tone for the Employee Experience

Finally, a well-crafted welcome kit can help set the tone for the employee experience. By providing a warm and welcoming introduction to the company and its culture, new employees are more likely to feel positive about their new role and more engaged in their work. This can lead to higher levels of job satisfaction and lower turnover rates.
In conclusion, a well-crafted welcome kit for employees is an essential tool for new employees. It helps new employees understand the company culture, policies, and procedures, and enhances their productivity. Additionally, it fosters a sense of belonging and makes new employees feel welcome and valued. Investing in a well-crafted welcome kit can help companies improve their employee onboarding process and retain top talent.

Unlike on the videos I have watched I could see their CPU running at 4600mhz
I suspect it would be because of my MOBO but I doubt it:

2023.04.01 11:57 SylvPMDRTD A Brainstorming Session with ChatGPT, Part 3

The final (at this time) bit of conversation with ChatGPT, Part 1 and Part 2.
What if the clothing than becomes such that is masks the outline of the human body or obscures the movement?
If the clothing masks the outline of the human body or obscures movement, it could make it more difficult for computer vision algorithms to detect and track individuals. However, it is important to note that such clothing may not always be practical or feasible for individuals to wear, especially in certain environments or situations.
Additionally, there are other factors that can be used to track individuals, such as gait analysis, which uses the unique way individuals walk to identify and track them. There are also other forms of biometric data, such as facial recognition, which can still be used even if an individual is wearing clothing that obscures their features.
Overall, while clothing can play a role in mitigating the detection and tracking of individuals through computer vision, it may not be a foolproof solution and other forms of identification and tracking may still be used.
Correct. Regarding gait analysis, is there anyway that one could predict the direction of turn an individual will take in regards to navigating a t-intersection hallway.
Yes, gait analysis can potentially be used to predict the direction of turn an individual will take in a T-intersection hallway. This is because the gait pattern of a person changes when they make a turn. By analyzing the gait pattern and other cues such as the position of the head and body, it may be possible to predict which direction a person will turn. However, this would require a high level of accuracy in gait analysis, and the ability to track a person's movements in real-time with precision. It may also be affected by factors such as the person's walking speed, the width of the hallway, and other environmental factors.
So the accuracy would thus be limited for large scale application?
Yes, that's correct. The accuracy of such a system would depend on various factors such as the quality of the video footage, the lighting conditions, and the uniqueness of an individual's gait. Therefore, it may not be reliable enough for large scale application, especially if high accuracy is required. However, it could potentially be useful in certain specific scenarios or contexts where these factors can be controlled or minimized.
If there was a parent system that had this information, could a smaller and more 'portable' version be created, given limited observational data?
It's possible that a smaller and more portable version of a gait analysis system could be created with limited observational data, but the accuracy and reliability of the system would likely be lower than a more robust system with a larger dataset. The system would need to be trained on a diverse set of gait patterns and turning behaviors in order to be able to accurately predict an individual's direction of turn in a T-intersection hallway, and the quality of the predictions would be directly tied to the amount and quality of data used to train the system. Additionally, the system would need to be continuously updated and refined with new data to ensure that its predictions remain accurate over time.
So could one create a subset sort of data class that is comparative with a previous overall larger dataset/
Yes, that is possible. A subset of data can be used to train a model that is comparable with a larger dataset. However, the quality of the model will depend on how representative the subset is of the larger dataset. If the subset is too small or not diverse enough, the model may not be able to capture the full range of variation present in the larger dataset, which could lead to reduced accuracy or reliability. Additionally, if the subset is biased in some way, the resulting model may also be biased. Therefore, it is important to carefully select a representative and unbiased subset of data for training a model.
Could this be reduced by introducing a limited categorizations of what the movements correspond to int he overall larger dataset? For example: Dancing VS Skating, etc?
Yes, by introducing limited categorizations of movements in the larger dataset, it could help to reduce the complexity of the problem and improve the accuracy of the predictions for the smaller subset of data. For instance, if the movements in the larger dataset are categorized as "walking", "running", "dancing", "skating", etc., it would be easier to predict the movements in a smaller subset of data based on these categories. However, the accuracy of the predictions will depend on the quality and representativeness of the larger dataset and the level of detail in the categorizations.
I am thinking of something that can be added as observations are being made, which then compares to the more extensive data set or the specific category that is likely associated. Could you expand on the feasibility and potential iterations this could take. Specifically the overall structuring of such a thing if done as a neural network
Yes, it is possible to design a neural network that can learn and update its knowledge as new observations are made. One such approach is known as online learning, where the neural network receives new data points incrementally and adjusts its weights and biases to fit the new data.
In the case of movement analysis, the neural network could be designed to categorize the movements based on predefined categories, such as dancing or skating, as you suggested. The neural network would need to be trained on a dataset that includes examples of each movement category.
As new observations are made, the neural network could update its knowledge by comparing the new movement to the existing categories and adjusting the weights and biases accordingly. This process is known as incremental learning.
One challenge with this approach is that the neural network may become biased towards the categories that it has been trained on and may not be able to recognize new or unusual movements. To address this, the neural network could be designed to also include an anomaly detection component that can flag any movements that do not fit the predefined categories.
Overall, the design and implementation of such a neural network would require careful consideration of the specific requirements and limitations of the movement analysis task at hand.
So we could theoretically use the anomaly capabilities of an HMM, given its ability to represent hidden states (in essence). However, such an anomaly has been noted in more recent testing that did not detect the movement. Would this have to than include larger movement refences to compare if it was a "human" moving or not?
Yes, incorporating a larger dataset of movement references could improve the accuracy of the anomaly detection system. This could include not only human movement references but also other movements that could be mistaken for human movement, such as movement caused by environmental factors like wind or animals.
Additionally, incorporating other sensors, such as acoustic or vibration sensors, could also help in distinguishing between different types of movements and identifying whether a detected anomaly is likely to be human or not.
I am assuming the acoustic portion could be used to not only identify human sounds, but also provide location differences (If the sensors where placed in varying places. Regarding the vibrational aspect. Could you provide a broad overview of the theoretical backings please?
Sure! Vibrational analysis is the study of how objects vibrate and transmit energy through vibrations. In the context of human movement detection, vibrational analysis can be used to detect and analyze the vibrations created by a person's movements. For example, when a person walks, their footsteps create vibrations that can be detected and analyzed.
One way to perform vibrational analysis is to use accelerometers, which are sensors that measure acceleration. By attaching accelerometers to various parts of a structure, such as a floor or wall, the vibrations created by human movements can be measured and analyzed. These measurements can then be used to detect the presence of human movement and even to identify specific types of movements, such as walking or running.
Vibrational analysis can be especially useful in situations where other types of sensors, such as cameras or microphones, are not practical or effective. For example, in environments with low light or high levels of ambient noise, vibrational analysis may be a more reliable way to detect human movement.
Can you give you thoughts on my previous mentioning of the acoustics layout, and assumptions.
Sure! Based on your previous mentioning of using acoustics to identify human sounds and provide location differences, I think it's definitely feasible. Acoustic sensors can be used to pick up various human sounds, including speech, footsteps, and breathing, among others. By placing sensors in different locations, the system could potentially triangulate the source of the sound and determine the location of the person making the sound. Of course, there may be limitations to the accuracy of this approach, depending on the placement of the sensors, the acoustics of the environment, and other factors. Additionally, there may be challenges in differentiating between different sources of sound in a noisy environment. Overall, though, I think incorporating acoustic sensors into the system could provide valuable information for detecting and tracking human movement.
I agree if this was coupled with something like the vibrational analysis, it could be useful. However, if this was used in an area with multiple vibrational sources and acoustics (as well as the other factors mentioned) do you think something like detecting the shift in light could also help? I am not certain, however I am assuming there is a shift in visible light around people (or maybe use an alternative type of wavelength?)
It's possible to use light detection as an additional modality to detect human presence and movement. One approach is to use a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system, which emits pulses of laser light and measures the time it takes for the light to reflect off objects and return to the sensor. By analyzing the time delay and intensity of the reflected light, the LiDAR system can create a three-dimensional map of the environment and detect the presence and movement of objects, including humans.
Another approach is to use computer vision techniques to analyze changes in the visual scene caused by human presence and movement. For example, changes in the intensity or color of pixels in a video feed can be used to detect motion and track the movement of individuals. Additionally, thermal imaging cameras can detect the heat signatures of human bodies and track their movement in a scene.
However, it's important to note that the effectiveness of these techniques can be impacted by factors such as lighting conditions, occlusions, and environmental clutter. As with any multi-modal approach, combining multiple sources of information can help improve the accuracy and reliability of human detection and tracking in complex environments.

I have a pressing time sensitive issue with my car at a tow yard and every day the amount keeps going up. I have to pay a total of $601 and it goes up by $15 a day it is still there. i get paid on the 9th and can pay then but will incur almost $150 extra on top by that date of which I am trying to avoid paying. plus taxes i will need about $700.
I would have let the car stay there till next week but it is past its 30 day hold and at this point the tow company wants it out ASAP or file abandonment. i will take that interest hit and spread it into 3 payments of 300 each from next week and every two weeks thereafter. i think that sits at about 30%.

The Vault by Vans x Shane Gonzales Star Spangled Glamour Collaboration Drops Next Week
Vault by Vans and Shane Gonzales will soon be linking up to drop their first even collaboration. Dubbed the Vault by Vans x Shane Gonzales Star Spangled Glamour collaboration, this collection will include three Vault by Vans silhouettes, the Vans Old Skool VLT LX, Vans Authentic Zip VLT LX, and Vans Sk8-Hi Reissue Strap VLT LX, all styled out with Gonzales’ rock ‘n roll spin.
The Vault by Vans x Shane Gonzales Star Spangled Glamour collection represents All-American motifs that have stood the test of time as it plays off styles like cowboy boots, denim jeans and leather jackets. Using chrome, leather, and denim, the collection pays homage to the classic fashion that defined Sunset Boulevard, the iconic street in Hollywood, California. The Black leather Old Skool VLT LX sneaker features traditional Western cowboy embroidery creating a contrasting and multi-dimensional aesthetic that is both modern and nostalgic. The Authentic Zip VLT LX is reimagined in classic blue denim with hidden laces and chrome detailing, while the Sk8-Hi Reissue Strap VLT LX in black leather has several riders jacket details such as collars, epaulets and buckles.
“Collaborating with Vans is such a full circle moment for me. My friends and I grew up skating in Vans every day to and from school. Drawing on them, and thrashing them until they weren’t wearable anymore. When I got the opportunity to create my own collection, I wanted to re-imagine the 3 Vans silhouettes that bring me back to my childhood, and incorporate timeless all-American motifs into the design that I know will wear beautifully over time,” says Shane Gonzales.
The Vans x Shane Gonzales Star Spangled Glamour collaboration will retail for prices ranging from $130-$185. Look for the collection to be available beginning April 7 at Vans Downtown Los Angeles retail location, Midnightstudios.live, and select Vault by Vans retail partners.

It’s very L.A. You don’t have to write L.A., everybody just knows.””
Retailing for $140, the CLOT x Nike Cortez Clotez Forrest Gump is slated to release on April 7th through JUICE stores worldwide. No word yet on when these will drop on SNKRS. Coming Soon: New Balance 9060 Driftwood
Fans of the New Balance 9060 will be happy to hear that new colorways of the model are on the way. Arriving later on this year, here is a detailed look at the New Balance 9060 Driftwood.
The New Balance 9060 is a fairly new model that pays homage to New Balance’s 99X series. This time around, the beloved model is constructed in a mix of mesh, leather, and suede. In our opinion, the sneaker is dressed in a colorway that’s better suited for the fall season as it features a White mesh base with Tan suede overlays and Off White leather used on the “N” logos and heels. Your customary signature New Balance branding placements remain intact, all while being placed on top of a dual-density midsole featuring ABZORB and SBS cushioning atop a diamond outsole pattern inspired by classic 860 design.
Enjoy images of the New Balance 9060 Driftwood below and look for these to drop in the coming months at select New Balance retailers and NewBalance.com for the retail price of $150.

Fat Tongues Land On This Air Jordan 1 Mid
Jordan Brand is feeling a little creative so they’ve decided to modify the look and feel of the Air Jordan 1 Mid. Previewed below, this new iteration of the Air Jordan 1 Mid is given brand new fat tongues, which could very well be paying homage to the skateboarding culture.
This Air Jordan 1 Mid starts off with a Black nubuck upper paired with matching colored mesh tongues and lining. The Black upper is then contrasted by the Orange on the leather overlays with Red trimming. More Orange takes care of the Jumpman logos displayed on the aforementioned padded tongues and insoles, which also happen to house Michael Jordan’s signature. Black laces, a White midsole and Orange rubber outsole complete the look.
This fat tongue iteration of the Air Jordan 1 Mid has no release date but they are expected to drop in the coming months. Stay tuned for further developments.
