#4. Private Equity firm Managing Director - He was a Wharton alum and wrote quite an amazing LOR from what he told me - 8/10

Had Penn, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, all went well
Essays:
Common App - chose an extremely unique challenge, tied it to my main EC as well. everyone who read it loved it, including counselor, friends, seniors, college students, etc.
UChicago - wrote some of my best essays here. Quirky essay revolved around a previous prompt that i edited a bit, and managed to connect a v niche thing to my ancestral heritage and culture. Why UChicago was also filled with unique experiences cuz of my sister.
Wharton - amazing essays according to all who read them, included a lot of specific stuff and stories as well.
Essays for the rest were also decent I’d say, not something that’d make me an auto admit definitely, but pretty good i guess.
Decisions: Acceptances: - USC (EA) w/ Presidential Scholarship (half-tuition)
- Northwestern University (RD)
- NYU Stern (RD)
- UCSD
Waitlists: - UCLA
- Dartmouth University (RD)
- Columbia University (RD)
Rejections: - UChicago EA → RD deferred, then rejected.
- Harvard RD
- Yale RD
- Princeton RD
- UPenn Wharton RD
- Stanford RD
- Duke RD
- UC Berkeley
Thoughts:
#1 - It didn't all work out the way I'd have wanted. NYU Stern is fucking great, I def know that, but can't help but feel a bit saddened by all the rejections, especially Wharton, given the amount of Wharton-specific stuff on my profile, as well as the LORs from Wharton-affiliated people, and the fact that my best essays were for them.
#2 - Another thing that could've affected me was that there were also some issues with my school since there was some drama regarding an applicant faking their resume, and that resulted in the school getting only 2 ivy acceptances in RD, while we have historically gotten more than 10 every year. We also got no acceptances from Duke, Stanford, or UChicago, despite historically getting at least 3-4, and having really great applicants this year.
#3 - Nevertheless, for all you internationals out there - there's a lot of luck involved in this process, especially if you're an applicant from an extremely competitive country like India or China. So definitely ensure that you've got good backups somewhere. I went all out for the USA, applying only to super-reaches because I knew that I had a good backup in India in case nothing worked out.
Keep looking out for opportunities for all types of extracurriculars, since they're a really important part of your application, and definitely ensure that your essays don't look refined or artificial, they should be something that makes the AO feel a personal connection with you.
#4 - Most importantly, don't let college decisions ever define you or what you'll achieve in life. If y'all have any questions whatsoever, feel free to DM, I'll be down to help out. Good luck to my juniors, wish y'all the best!

2023.04.01 09:26 sodomy 35 [M4F] Georgetown/Washington DC/Surrounding areas - Dominant Social Chameleon ISO stimuli
An author's note: Please read this post in it's entirety before you message me, I've added a follow up to answer most of the basic questions I've been asked over the last 3 years since I started posting my AD.
All my previous iterations were mostly about what role I could fulfill; and while this mostly still is true, walking amongst the elites the last week has opened my eyes... I'm looking for a complacent trophy to put on full display. Arriving to this city I already had a deep... Passion for power, governance; and just over all domination -- Washington DC fulfills my lust, and thirst for both political power, and monetary gain. Now I want, not need an adequate toy to share this experience with. Before I was playing conservatively; not anymore,
I've allowed my ego to rampant and on auto-pilot; thus far everything is according to design.
I'm as amoral as they come; I will eviscerate my way to the top of the governmental, and corporate ladder(s). I'm a retired hacker that has realized my full potential is being squandered away, so I'll begin to kick in the doors of 3 letter agencies until recruit me; or I die trying.
I've come to the conclusion that you need to make an
impression with these sort of things, so I'm going to just let my words flow freely. So here we
go:
Basics:
Height: 5'7
Weight: 175, could stand to lose a few lbs to get my abs back.
Eyes: Brown eyes.
Hair: Long curly brown hair (think Slash Rose's illegitimate son.)
Race: White.
Ethnicity: Hispanic (Cuban.)
Languages: Spanish, English, Sign-language.
Profession: Network Engineer in NW DC.
Religion: Agnostic.
A little about
me:
I like long walks on the beach, sunsets, oh did I mention that I'm a sadist, and that
I'm utterly insane?
I've been called a silver tongued devil; Quick witted, charismatic, with just the right amount of sarcasm.
Hobbies: Not being bored, it's a lot harder than it sounds. I enjoy learning/conversing about The Universe/space, science, and technology. I was quite nomadic in my 20s, having visited two different countries, lived in over 17 states, visited over 38.
Music: I'm more of a rhythm of the beat type of person vs. lyrics, but generally I've found myself to enjoy electronica. Definitely like a lot 80s synth pop, but again, this is just the preference, not really against the rest of the genres.
Shows: Billions, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Board Walk Empire, Billions, Rome, Deadwood, Halt and Catch Fire, The Sopranos, South Park, Mad Men, Dexter,
Movies: Beetlejuice, Brain Scan, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,
"What are you looking for?" Well I can encompass a Master, a Dominant, or a Daddy, so it's really what can I provide for
you?1
"How is such a thing possible?" Antisocial Personality Disorder (
3.4 for those interested.)
"Why was it necessary to mention that?" To give credence as to how I can, and have been all aspects of Dominance.
"Monogamy or polyamory?" Favoritism towards polyamory, but seeing as it's rare to find multiple partners that allow me to explore my more sadistic side without tension, and/or drama, I'd go with monogamy if the individual allowed me to be depraved.
Preference in the following order: Slave, submissive, little (I will explain further below.)
Kinks: Sadism, TPE, CNC, bondage, degradation, humiliation, knife play, rope play, rape/abduction play, choking, impact play, spanking, hair pulling (I think you get the idea by now, there are still far more, here's a more comprehensive
list.)
Experience: 15+ years.
So about that whole preference thing, as I am on the ASPD spectrum I'm capable of fulfilling whatever role(s) are required of me to get what I want. So let me explain further, I'm openly telling you far ahead of time that I lack emotions and empathy, with the hopes that me giving you the illusion of whatever it is you require, will be met with reciprocation of the kinks we can agree upon. This is where the waters get muddied for little's, I can definitely treat you like the princess you want to be, without all the douche-baggery you'll deal with as people tugging at your heart strings. Plenty of people around here pretend to be Daddies and will leave you absolutely heartbroken. Tired of games? Tired of bullshit? Well here's someone willing to give you all the care, attention, and affection you desire without any hassles. "Why would you want to be a Daddy Dom given your lack of emotions, and empathy?" I am a social chameleon. I've been perfecting my art for the majority of my life, I like the challenge. I like to learn people and, give them what they want with the idea that I get what I want in the end, it's called a social transaction. I know what respect is, and I believe I need to write a little about this. Once we've discussed clear limits, and terms, they shall not be crossed, it's counter productive for me to lose my play thing(s). I can be fiercely territorial of all my possessions, that includes the individual(s) I'm involved with, what is mine will be protected, whether you're a slave, a submissive, or a little. If you want someone to completely treat you like trash, I'm more than willingly to oblige, if you need a savior and a protector, well I can do that too. I'm able to encompass what is required; a means to an end. "What are you looking for in a submissive?" I'd like it to extend outside of the bedroom, but if it doesn't, whatever, I'm not going to repeat myself, so hopefully you've read this in it's entirety. "What are you looking for in a slave?" Mostly aesthetics, and objectification. Of course I'd expect loyalty, servitude, and there's a plethora more, but I don't feel I need to be too descriptive on this part. Now that I've written a fucking novel about myself, let's get to you.... Age: I prefer them younger (18+) , but have dated women as old as 45; generally if I find you attractive, I won't care.
Height: the shorter the better, but I've dated women taller than myself, not a deal breaker.
Weight: I'd like someone on the smaller side, a few extra pounds will be acceptable, but no one overweight please, just not my thing.
I will list things below in order of preference, not necessarily a disqualifier. (This is only opinion, not a rating system.) Race: White, but as long as I'm attracted I won't care, I don't discriminate.
Ethnicity: N/A read above.
Language(s): The more the merrier, accents are a huge plus, whether a southern drawl, or other.
Religion: I'm completely open to allowing you to practice whatever you'd like, just don't expect me to participate; I can be respectful of your beliefs, as long as you're respectful of mine, I am a man of science, The Universe is my religion (so to speak.)
Eyes: Blue, green, hazel, brown (If you have Heterochromia iridum you move to the front of the line, I like mutations.)
Hair: The longer the better, no preference as to style, as for color: I prefer
true blondes, redheads, dirty blondes, and then brown.
Tattoos: Sure, whatever, as long as it's not overwhelming or flat out tacky, in this day in age it's harder to find someone with none, so as the trend follows above.
Piercings: Depends, some people can pull off septum piercings, but I personally dislike them, so if it compliments your facial features, sure why not. But there is definitely a breaking point where it becomes overwhelming and you just look like Hellraiser.
Education: Strong preference towards educated women, this does not necessarily mean academics, open to all.
Profession: No preference, but I do tend to like women in psychology (I have my reasons.)
Personality: If I have to learn "your" pronouns, or apologize for my "white male privilege" you can fuck right
off; I don't care about
politics.
Children: Strong preference in favor of not having them, unless we never intend to meet, or you don't expect a level of commitment from me to them, then I don't readily care, non-factor. To explain a tad bit, it isn't that I can't, I just would rather not raise children, I have too many plans in life that children would derail, maybe later.
If you're interested in communicating further, I prefer talking on these platforms and in this order:
Discord, WhatsApp, Reddit Chat\, Skype, Kik,* open to other forms of contact.
\Reddit Chat isn't the same thing as their mailing system, just an FYI.*
Go ahead and shoot me a message, I'm
waiting.
An update:
Well just to filter some things out, since I get this so many times... I will not be putting a big editorial process to this update(I say this now, after already re-reading, and editing a minimum of 5 times; I'm a slave to my own perfectionism,) so if you mostly have questions about me, ASPD, and things of the like, read this before you message me.
While I absolute love to talk about myself because I'm just such a
narcissistic-hedonist, I also do get bored of
repeating myself, even if it is a new person. As such read everything in it's entirety before you message me, as I'm going to entertain less, and less messages about me, and not what I'm seeking, I'd rather focus on only replying to potential
partners, and absolutely nothing else, that being said if anything I have not covered in this update, or post still burns an answer from you, by all means message me.
"Were you formally diagnosed?" I get asked about this A LOT, I'm not going to go into very many details, suffice it to say, yes, but it's been labeled as a misdiagnosis, all you need to know is I score high, and I do the things you'd expect, the pyromania, the violence that is actually associated at early age, the works, I'm not comfortable giving you more beyond that, and I will not be entertaining questions about my personal life, maybe a partner could ask me those questions, but I'm not letting you in my head, that's my
game, not the other way around :).
Please
do your own research beyond this point, it's borderline laziness how often I keep getting asked about this.
"Why are you so open about it(ASPD)?" Isn't it obvious? A lot of you can't fathom why someone with ASPD would just openly come out, and admit to people, well I guess I really should've brushed up on this when I first made my post, or at least go into a far more
descriptive detail than I had originally, so here goes:
If I'm ever to lead a sort of a long term relationship based on trust, and honesty, just how in the HELL do you expect me to explain this to you ever so casually? It's best to show your cards in the beginning, this is my own baggage, or some form there of.
There's two reasons I'm choosing to do this online, and vehemently under anonymity; 99% of you will be irrelevant to me, 99% of you will never meet me, it's just that simple, ergo why wouldn't I just preface my entire description as such, and as brutally honest as possible? Secondly I do not want a partner whom I need to continue to wear a mask for, I want to be me, the real me, the good, the bad, and the ugly.
What I find the most is women that
fetishize the entire ordeal, that's all fine and dandy, but it does show just a lack of understanding about what APSD is as a whole, and to be perfectly blunt, you're wasting my time, I don't need to feed into your lonely thrill romance you spun in your head from watching true crime dramas. More often than not, this what happens, spare us the role-playing, I'm just not that bored.
"Empathy" One clear distinction I'd like to make, so I can stop getting asked about it, we DO have empathy, it's just not how YOU experience empathy. Think of a light switch, by default most of the population's is on, ours is off by default, and furthermore we have the ability to turn it on, and off. Yes, it is that simple, yes we use it for manipulation, now stop asking me about this, it's boring to repeat this.
"Emotions" Boredom, rage. This is what I'm capable of in the dark, empathy off. I'm constantly seeking stimuli, if you notice by actually looking through my posts, I've moved a ton of times, and always national parks... New atmosphere, new adventures, new dangers, you know, the shit that gets your heart pumping, adrenaline. This is my favorite drug, this is the high I constantly chase to kill the boredom. Rage is just self explanatory, my defaults are animalistic.
I am fully capable of experiencing all emotions, it's just for the most part, because I don't want do, I don't allow myself to.
"Manipulation" For the longest time I told myself who cares if I burn bridges in my wake, I'm building a highway in its place. Mostly still true, and I absolutely use it on a daily basis for survival, I must stress, and emphasize survival, here is why; I'm human, like the rest of you, what do you do on a daily basis, if not find means, and ways to survive, and entertain yourself? I know no other way other than to use people to my advantage, I minimize the damage where I can, and move about my daily existence, guilt, and worry free about doing any wrong, an argument could be made that we all use each other in some weight, or capacity, and that's good enough for me.
I'm sure by now you're probably wondering what the hell any of that has to do with anything, it's simple if the point flew over your head, again. I'm tired of manipulating people, using them, abusing them, discarding them, I didn't grow a conscious I'm not "growing" as a person, but much more likely, I'm just bored of the routine, or the process, which has become the symphony of my life.
"Love" I by no means ever want to experience this love you all chase like Alice clumsily falling down the rabbit hole. I've seen it so much in my life it's downright pathetic, and I actually feel bad for those of you that have such strong emotions, see empaths. You're slaves to these emotions, you let people use and manipulate you, you've been hurt, and had your heart ripped from your chest, and it feels like you no longer have purpose, lacking direction, and meaning in life. I merely know this from generally observing humans for most of my natural born life. I'm more than happy to remain the way I have always been, and never wish to experience emotions in the way you do, I find it to be an advantage, one I can apply to more important things in life, like the pursuit of knowledge.
I hope the psych nerds will now stop asking me these questions, I've paid my
dues.
"Preferences" My preferences, are just that, a list of my preferences, at no point in any of my writing did I say I was prejudice between one thing, or that I show favoritism. I merely made a chart listing some of the attributes that I myself, personally find to be significant to me, but that isn't to say, or detract from other things. It's the equivalent of asking me if I prefer Metallica, or Megadeth; well I'm going to say I prefer one over the other, but I enjoy both, and the genre as a whole, the genre being
women in this case. I enjoy women for my own personal entertainment, and amusement -- which makes it all the more
hilarious to me when I get called a
misogynist.
so please spare me all your comments, and messages telling me that it's so "
intimidating", if my post intimidates you, what can I really even begin to say about that? It doesn't sound like we'd be compatible, or much less you'd be able to accept me as a person, in any case this is a personal issue.
"You Need Help!" I know what the help is, they just remind you repeatedly that your actions have consequences, they do not prescribe a medication for this, just therapy, and I know enough already to check myself, it really is that easy.
P.S: "To My Adoring Fans" You call me an edge-lord, cringe, and a wide range of inane insults, that truly don't phase me, since I get a lot of these messages, I thought I'd give you my
rebuttal; just so you know I sleep
naked so that anyone that doesn't like me, can kiss my
ass - feel free to
visit anytime!
P.S.S: I now operate, function, and walk amongst the elite of the nation; I see my kind everywhere, this is what Rome must of felt like in it's heyday; Cicero you clever bastard... I bid you all adieu -- and depart with this:
{"Το σύμπαν είναι αλλαγή. η ζωή μας είναι αυτό που την κάνουν οι σκέψεις μας.";}
Sincerely,

2023.04.01 04:26 trudesign Android Automotive, last strike, gonna get a refund
“Mike Himche say GM will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with upcoming electric cars, beginning with the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV. Instead, you'll have to rely on Android Automotive and its apps.
Users will get eight years of free Google Assistant and Google Maps use at no extra charge, GM says. The company doesn't mention what you'll pay if you still need those functions afterward. We've asked GM for comment. It will still offer CarPlay and Android Auto in combustion engine models, and you won't lose access on existing EVs. GM plans an all-electric passenger vehicle line by 2035.”
I’m all apple all day and have been for over a decade. Moreso, I’m all about modularity and open source, and hate when companies knee cap themselves. This is a dumb move, and I think I’m out. Thoughts?

Letters of Recommendation 1st recommender was out of necessity to have a STEM recommender teacher. We chill but aren't super close and I'm not like an exceptional math student. Had their class for multiple years different courses. doesn't dislike me or anything (that i'm aware of) but probably added nothing substantial for my application. 4/10?
2nd recommender and I vibe :D a social studies teacher i had for two AP years, chill asf, said many times he was impressed with my work in his class and compared me to another student years prior who "also" walked in knowing almost everything already. i'm not like earth destroyingly exceptional in any class because i never really had the foresight to be like SUPER INVOLVED and crazy but i'd say probably 8/10
Interviews Georgetown: (9/10): We vibed so hard !!!! Very relatable, younger person who was funny and super chill, full of energy, and actually fun to talk to. Dissipated my nerves very quickly. It was over zoom and i had like five pages of notes/discussion topics around me just out of the camera's view... LOL.
For all other schools I made the (probably stupid) choice to check off the not requesting an interview box on the common app. Honestly even though Georgetown's went so well, the nerves in the days leading up to it were literally destroying my mental health and I just couldn't put myself through it again no matter how detrimental it may have been. Since I didn't much care for UPenn, when my interviewer emailed me i just ignored it. And his two follow up emails. I kind of feel bad, but I just couldn't take the stress. :I
Essays My personal statement essay was balling I'm not going to lie. 9/10 IMO for the acceptances I got that seem kinda... outrageous I genuinely believe my writing carried. Because if there's one thing I can do, it's write. Wrote about All Dogs Go To Heaven, the heat death of the universe, and programming to make life easier.
Supps:
The difficult conversation one long-form (400 words) was balling, again probably carried. But when I went to fill out other schools' supplementals who had the same or similar prompts but lower word counts, I just scaled the original down badly and it lost much of what made it good originally. So 400 words 9/10, shorter ones 5/10.
My "Why College" ones mostly sucked I'm not going to lie, I did not prepare myself sufficiently for this process and I never had a real dream school so I wrote some pretty silly stuff. Lol. 4/10
I think some of my little 50 or less word miscellaneous ones were balling though. Except for UNC i rushed to submit it for EA and they were cringe asf. 7/10.
Decisions (indicate ED/EA/REA/SCEA/RD) some of the EA/RD etc might be wrong because I deleted most of the ones I didn't care abt off my pins fairly quickly, and I applied to like 38 schools and I might be forgetting some decisions. Also some auto rejects coming bc I didn't finish their app checklists lol
Acceptances: - Florida State University (EA w/Benacquisto Scholarship)
- University of Connecticut (RD, some scholarship but i dont remember it)
- University of Maryland (EA)
- University of Virginia!! (EA)
- Georgetown!! (EA)
- VANDERBILT!! (RD + Crescere Aude Summer Merit Scholarship, & lots of need based aid!!!!!)
- William & Mary (RD with the likely letter postcard thing)
- University of Oregon (RD, some scholarship i dont remember)
- University of Vermont (RD I think, + honors college and some scholarship i don't remember)
- Saint Leo University (RD, early game safety, mostly applied there to practice applying)
- James Madison University(RD I think, applied for decent safety/target)
- Seattle University (RD, Only applied bc i read they might send a custom poster w/a quote from ur essay.... and they did not..... :I )
Waitlists: - American University (RD)
- UChicago (RD, I didn't even finish the application checklist... applied through scoir and my counselor never sent materials through it, luckily only applied for the chance of a scarf but like bruh)
- Swarthmore (RD, this one did hurt a bit. thought they were rlly cool.)
- Davidson College (RD, this one too, liked the vibe I gleamed from what others online said about it)
- University of Washington(RD, only applied bc they were ranked high on something early in app season, but still that single line waitlist notification was downright disrespectful)
- Emory University (RD, waitlisted at the Oxford College. Was not fond of Emory so not heartbroken.)

- Tufts(EA, applied for funsies, didn't finish app checklist, highly expected)
- Georgia Tech(EA, guaranteed transfer pathway, but i wouldn't want to go to such a tech focused school now)
- UNC Chapel Hill(EA, my OG dream school I did the most research on early in the process, expected at least a deferral or waitlist like bro)
- George Mason, Colgate, Reed, and many others I'm def forgetting (RD, stopped bothering with the app checklists when I got reach offers, haven't been notified of my rejection but it's coming)
Additional Information: No one around me had much guidance to offer and I really walked into this process blind. My school doesn't provide ANY resources about applying to college that's not a local community college or a nearby, unknown state school. Thankfully my gifted counselor at least knew what the common app was, I had to explain to my regular guidance counselor how to submit the mid-year report (their caseload is way too high and they aren't actually super well versed in competitive admissions, they don't do much guidance other than setting up our schedules every year) I discovered A2C a little late in the process but who knows where I'd be without them and also my fee waivers for everything.
I know my ECs are unimpressive to say the least, but honestly, I barely knew what kinds of things colleges liked to see until very recently. I just did the art club because I enjoyed it and my job because I needed money. There were other things, like a Spanish club freshman year and sporadic volunteering, but I never wrote any of it down and was mostly doing it for fun (and not super often) so I didn't bother with it.
I've always loved school and naturally excelled in my classes, which does make me a bit nervous for college because my study habits are definitely underdeveloped, lol... but I'm going to do my best. No one in my life was ever pressuring me or anything, which is kind of unfortunate as I'm a chronic procrastinator and probably could've done something more impressive with my time if I wasn't constantly playing video games and then cramming to play catch up before quarterly grades come out.
But you know what? In spite of it all, I'm freaking proud of myself. I did my best with what I had, had numerous mental breakdowns over the workload that literally no one but myself was pressuring me to have, and now graduation is nigh. And I got into mf UVA OOS, Georgetown, and VANDERBILT, which is looking like where I'll probably end up (going to tour the campus soon on admitted students' day!) I think the
prestige opportunities they provide, being slightly closer to home than Virginia, and the greater flexibility to explore subjects across their CAS and engineering schools is optimal considering my uncertain path.
I like to think of myself as a kind of underdog (lol) as with the one glaringly obvious disadvantage to my application, I still kinda made it. And I'm proud of every one of y'all too, wherever you're ending up!!!!!

2023.03.31 23:19 eccome Why can’t I find car insurance online?
I started searching for quotes on a website that said that it would help me compare quotes from different auto insurance companies. I filled in my information, and it gave me some results. However each result was another insurance comparison website and not an actual quote. I’ve gone from compare.com to savvy.insure to Ever Quote to Insurance Rates for Less to Insured Nation. None of these websites ever give me a quote, they only give me links that redirect to another page where I will find more links that will redirect me again. Why is it like this? How can I compare actual quotes? Sorry for the rant but I need help.

2023.03.31 21:55 HotIce05 Why America's EV chargers keep breaking
Imagine living in a world where the gas station has trouble providing gasoline.
Every few times a driver fills up, something goes haywire — the gas doesn’t flow, or it flows fast for a while and then slows to a trickle. Other times, the credit card payment is mysteriously rejected or the screen is blank.
If the consumer wants a helping hand, too bad. In this world, the gas station has no human, and the only option is a 1-800 number. The gas pumps are alone in the middle of a big parking lot.
Swap the word “gasoline” for “electricity,” and this is a realistic description of what happens every day at electric-vehicle charging stations across the United States. The high-tech, high-speed highway fueling system that America is building to power its EVs and replace the gas station is riddled with glitches that are proving difficult to stamp out.
Individually, they are hiccups, but collectively, their consequences could be profound.
“It adds to the non-EV driver’s view of the world that EV charging is painful,” said Bill Ferro, a software expert and founder of EVSession, an EV charger analytics firm. “People feeling that it’s a risk to buy an EV because the fast-charging infrastructure stinks is going to slow down EV adoption.”
The problems are experienced by those who use fast chargers on the go and who aren’t driving Teslas. Studies and innumerable anecdotes describe the strange stumbles they encounter: a blank screen, a broken plug, a credit card payment that fails, sessions that abort without warning, electric current that flows fast this moment and slowly the next (Energywire, March 21).
Behind the snafus are a daunting set of structural problems. They are tied to the peculiar way that EV chargers have evolved, and the fact that wires and batteries are way more complicated than what happens at the gas station.
“It’s a harder problem than pumping fuel from one reservoir into another,” Ferro said.
The problems are persisting even as billions of dollars pour into the charging sector from the federal and state governments, network operators and automakers.
Several recent studies of the charging system have found discouraging results.
Last year, researchers visited every public fast charger in the San Francisco Bay Area and found that almost 23 percent of them had “unresponsive or unavailable screens, payment system failures, charge initiation failures, network failures, or broken connectors.” And in a survey of EV drivers, the auto consultancy J.D. Power found the public charging network “plagued with non-functioning stations.” One in five sessions failed to deliver a charge. Almost three-quarters of those failures involved a station that malfunctioned or was offline.
Realizing the urgency of a fix, a variety of public and private players are trying out solutions.
The Biden administration, for example, set standards for “uptime,” or the percentage of time a charger is operational. California is launching a major inquiry into how to improve the customer experience. Automaker Ford Motor Co. last year deployed its own squad of station auditors (Energywire, Jan. 4, 2022). The largest public network, Electrify America, is replacing a fifth of its stations with newer models.
But many of these actions work at the edges of a black hole.
No one can define what it means for an EV driver to have a satisfactory charging experience. No underlying data exists. As hundreds of thousands of Americans buy EVs and start traveling the highways, this lack of a yardstick means that no one is accountable. Without accountability, problems are likely to persist.
The concern for industry is that the swelling ranks of EV drivers will tell their friends that highway charging is a little buggy, a little annoying — just enough of a hindrance that those millions of friends hold off from going electric, while the planet steadily warms.
Government steps in
Difficulties with EV fueling aren’t encountered everywhere. But they’re common in areas where the government is spending the most money and has staked its claim on improving the charging experience.
Home charging generally goes off without a hitch. The same goes for other “slow,” or Level 2, chargers that are sprinkled at workplaces and in parking lots and fill the battery by sipping on electrons for hours.
The bugs are most common with fast chargers, known as direct-current fast chargers, or DCFC. These are the charging solution when a driver is on the go and needs to refill the battery in 15 or 30 minutes.
These super-outlets exist near highway stops, in urban cores and at suburban crossroads. Building a network of them is the top priority of the Biden administration as it spends $7.5 billion for EV-charging infrastructure that Congress approved in the bipartisan infrastructure law. The first funding round is intended to blanket the country with DCFC chargers at 50-mile intervals along major highways.
Besides just building the stations, the government’s goal has been to create high standards, including better customer satisfaction.
The Federal Highway Administration, which is administering the program, said it “intends to incentivize charging station operators to improve reliability not just for chargers purchased with [government] funds but for all charging stations in the country.”
The irony is that a reliable, national charging network with high customer satisfaction already exists. It’s called the Supercharger network, built and run by Tesla Inc.
Users and experts are in wide agreement that Tesla has generally solved the problems that dog other networks. Its drivers plug in, pay and charge with few fails. Superchargers were exclusively for Tesla drivers until last month, when Tesla started opening parts of the network to other EV models (Energywire, Feb. 15, 2023).
Tesla also pioneered and excels at other practices that competing networks struggle to match — and that gas stations can’t do at all.
For example, punch in a destination on the Tesla app or the dashboard screen, and you get a route of Superchargers to stop at, with reliable information on which plugs are working and whether or not they are currently occupied.
A prime reason for Tesla’s success, experts say, is that Tesla owns and controls the entire ecosystem and all of its data. It built the cars, runs the chargers and manages the payments. If something breaks at the station, it’s Tesla’s job to repair it. There’s zero doubt who’s responsible.
The reason other, non-Tesla networks are having such troubles is that the public charging system has a lot more actors. They include a panoply of automakers, charging network operators, route-finding tools and now the government.
None has stepped up to take Tesla’s level of responsibility, and it’s not clear anyone will.
“Who’s owning this experience for me?” said Matt Teske, the founder and CEO of Chargeway, a EV-network software platform, putting himself in the position of an EV driver. “The answer is no one.”
A product not for customers
One reason today’s charging stations don’t work very well is their strange evolution as a consumer product.
Like EVs themselves, charging stations first arrived on the roads not because customers sought them out, but because regulators required them.
In the early 2000s, the California Air Resources Board demanded that automakers sell EVs to participate in the state’s auto market. Charging stations followed a parallel path.
One of today’s leading networks, EVgo Inc., was born from a 2012 legal settlement between NRG Energy Inc. and the California Public Utility Commission to resolve the electricity-market power crisis of the early 2000s. Another, Electrify America, is an entity that automaker Volkswagen AG was forced to create in 2016 as a penalty for cheating on its diesel emissions.
Tasked with satisfying regulators — and not customers — these companies saved money with a particular set of solutions.
“It was treated like it was really simple,” Teske said.
The charging station wouldn’t work like a gas station, with an employee in a nearby kiosk. Instead, it would operate without human intervention, like an ATM or a vending machine, but one that sells high-voltage electricity instead of Cokes.
But, unlike the ATM or vending box, the charging station wouldn’t get the full customer treatment. It wouldn’t be located under an awning, or be particularly well-lit or observed by security cameras. Instead, the electric car would be treated more like, well, a car. Stations were sited out in the elements, in the middle or at the edges of a parking lots, far from watchful eyes and easy targets for vandals.
Finally, the early networks didn’t offer the option of paying by credit card, although Electrify America was required to. Charging networks preferred to avoid the fees and complexity of Visa or Mastercard. Rather, payments would go to the network directly through a membership card.
What goes wrong
In the early days, none of these decisions much mattered. Early EV buyers were true believers who shrugged off the inconvenience of a dark parking lot or a frustrating charging session.
But as EVs not called Tesla have started to sell in earnest, the cost-trimming decisions of yesteryear have contributed to today’s outbreak of snafus.
A charging station, it turns out, is vastly more complicated and breakable than a vending machine.
“If you’re looking for a checklist of what could go wrong,” Teske said, “it’s a long list.”
Inside the kiosk’s metal shell sit sophisticated power electronics. It sends dangerous levels of electric current through a heavy-duty cable and to a connector, which can be easily disabled with a wad of gum. The video screen — crucial for communicating information to the driver, like the prices and how long a charging session will last — can be defaced or broken. Any number of problems can befall a driver trying to tap, insert or swipe a payment card.
And then there’s the computer code.
“It’s all software, at the end of the day,” said Ken Tennyson, the director of quality and conformance at Electrify America, which has 800 or so stations around the United States.
The recipient of the cash from an ATM or the Snickers from a vending machine is a human hand. The recipient of the electrons from a charging session is an electric vehicle — or better put, an ever-changing, ever-widening array of electric vehicles, each of which communicates with the charging station with its own version of software.
While software protocols exist for the charging industry, “adherence to those standards is not perfect, and the standards themselves are not perfect,” Tennyson said.
Some of these software problems are the growing pains that come with any young and high-tech industry that hasn’t worked out the kinks. This one, however, is complicated by the sheer number of systems involved.
A satisfying charging session is an orchestra. The charging station, the network operator, the vehicle and the payments all work together seamlessly. But today, the orchestra is out of tune.
These disjunctions create problems that to the driver are inexplicable.
For example, the kilowatts delivered at any particular moment during a charging session — the rough equivalent of the amount of gasoline tumbling out of a pump — can fluctuate up and down without explanation. This is often due to faulty communication between the station’s electronics and the car’s, as they try to speak the same software language but fail.
All these handoffs also make it hard for networks to emulate Tesla’s navigational prowess. Tesla competitors, like General Motors Co.’s Bolt or Ford’s Lightning F-150, might be able to tell you that the next station is working and has room — or it might not. Software incompatibility makes things janky.
“It’s hard because people are bundling all the pieces together and there’s not one owner of the process,” said Ferro of EVSession.
A solution, of sorts
To improve reliability amid this confusion, industry and governments have turned to a measurement of dubious value.
That metric is uptime. Applied to machinery or systems, uptime is a simple measurement. It is the amount of time in a given period that a machine is operational, stated as a percentage.
Uptime is a binary. A machine is either up, or it’s down. A charging station is considered “up” if its operator pings it and gets a positive response. But that narrow definition can collapse with an experience as complex as charging.
Uptime “doesn’t measure whether the connector is broken, or there’s payment-processing issues, or the parking space is ICE’d,” said Loren McDonald, an independent EV-charging analyst. ICE refers to a EV-charging parking space being occupied by an internal-combustion engine vehicle, another bane of EV drivers.
The metric fails, McDonald added, because it doesn’t answer the key question: “Can I charge or not?”
“Uptime doesn’t capture that,” he said.
Nonetheless, uptime has become the foundation on which federal and state governments are measuring performance as they dole out billions of public dollars.
For example, the Biden administration decreed last year that charging stations receiving federal money from the bipartisan infrastructure law must achieve better than 97 percent uptime.
It’s not alone in that target range. Colorado, New York and Vermont have adopted a 97 percent standard for their charger funding, while the state of Maine has adopted a lower 95 percent. Some electric utilities, like Louisville Gas & Electric in Kentucky and Consolidated Edison in New York, have aimed for as high as 99 percent.
Narrow as it is, the federal standard is at least a start. “It’s really helpful to have that federal guidance out there,” said Jesse Way, a clean transportation policy advisor at Nescaum, a nonprofit association of air-quality agencies in the Northeast.
Whether a 97 percent uptime is rigorous or not depends on whom you ask.
Tennyson of Electrify America considers it quite rigorous because it leaves a charging station with little room for error. A breakdown requires repairs that can consume days. In a year, he said, “You don’t have a tolerance for more than two or three failures.”
The reverse is argued by McDonald, the EV analyst. He points out that 97 percent uptime means three percent downtime. In the course of a year, that’s downtime of 11 days.
“Which is a really low bar if you ask me,” he said. “Could you imagine Amazon Web Services” — Amazon.com Inc.’s cloud product for businesses — “being down 11 days a year?”
A data void
One reason the Biden administration may have seized the narrow solution of uptime to solve the broad problems of EV-charger reliability is that no other options exist.
“The uptime calculation does not address all categories of failure or ways that chargers may fail to provide a satisfying customer experience,” the Federal Highway Administration conceded in guidance it released to states earlier this year.
Why not do better? “Insufficient data are available,” FHWA said.
That lack of data is a key gap, experts say. No independent, third-party source of charging data exists in the U.S. today. If a charging network claims to achieve 97 percent uptime — and many do — there’s no way to check out the claim.
That’s a worry for states that are entrusted with spending millions of dollars of federal money to build charging networks. The feds require them to achieve 97 percent uptime. But Teske, of the company Chargeway, pointed out that states who are vetting the companies to build those networks are “taking the sellers at their word.”
Solutions may be coming, but they will take time.
As part of the bipartisan infrastructure bill, the Biden administration gained the authority to gather data from the charging stations it funds. States are required to start sending data along a year from now. That information will, FHWA says, become “a national database and analytics platform” with “a public-facing dashboard.”
A major structural solution may be in the works in California.
Last year, California lawmakers passed a bill that requires new record-keeping and reporting standards for charging stations that get state money. The rules, to be drafted by the California Energy Commission (CEC), are due by 2024. They could eventually be copied by the numerous of states that align themselves with California’s transportation emissions policies.
“It’s very complicated, we don’t have all the answers,” said Patty Monahan, a CEC commissioner, at a Bloomberg New Energy Finance conference earlier this year. “This is a huge inquiry.”
In the meantime, the gritted teeth of those using highway fast chargers are unlikely to relax anytime soon. The next wave of EV adoption will, in part, continue to be a story of inert plugs and frowning drivers, posted on Instagram for all to see.
“I see this is a problem for the next five years,” said Ferro, the EV charging expert. “Either Tesla will take over the entire charging network of the U.S., or everyone else will get their act together, or a little bit of both.”

| I know for a fact there are fast chargers on the route but Gadget (our truck) doesn't think so... So I have to manually enter the address at each check point 😒 But! The truck is a champ through snow and I take back my last post one bad range estimate. I'm getting 350 on conserve mode now in the cold/snow/roof top tent on. submitted by reader1668 to Rivian [link] [comments] |
2023.03.31 21:16 Dismal-Jellyfish Fed Report: "Despite generally strong conditions, Council members reported stark differences in economic impact between the “haves” and the “have nots.”" "Wealthier parts of their markets are not yet slowed by inflationary pressures, while lower-income households are feeling the squeeze."
| Source: https://www.federalreserve.gov/aboutthefed/files/CDIAC-meeting-20221117.pdf Community Depository Institutions Advisory Council: The Community Depository Institutions Advisory Council (CDIAC) was established in 2010 by the Board of Governors to provide input to the Board on the economy, lending conditions, and other issues of interest to community depository institutions. Unlike the Federal Advisory Council, CDIAC is not a statutory body, but it performs a parallel function in providing first-hand input to the Board on the economy, lending conditions, and other issues. Members are selected from representatives of banks, thrift institutions, and credit unions serving on local advisory councils at the twelve Federal Reserve Banks. One member of each of the Reserve Bank councils is selected to serve on the CDIAC, which meets twice a year with the Board in Washington. Overall Economic Conditions: How do Council members assess overall economic conditions in their regions? - Council members reported strong economic conditions as measured by spending, though there are concerns that strong inflationary pressures may at some point undermine real spending.
- Council members, particularly in the Fourth District, reported that the return of production and manufacturing from offshore locations is helping the economy with significant investment in manufacturing and capital expenditure.
- Despite generally strong conditions, Council members reported stark differences in economic impact between the “haves” and the “have nots.”
- Wealthier parts of their markets are not yet slowed by inflationary pressures, while lower-income households are feeling the squeeze.
- The possibility of a recession remains a concern, but so far declines in overall spending are not evident.
- Despite being vocal about price increases, consumers are continuing to spend.
Inflation: Are the prices o for products and services rising (or declining) more or less quickly than in the recent past? Are the prices for the products and services Council members purchase rising more or less quickly?: - Council members generally reported that inflationary pressures remain strong, with prices rising rapidly.
- Some Council members reported early signs of inflation softening for some goods in certain sectors.
- Despite rising prices, customers and businesses have not yet pulled back on spending.
- Council members summarized sentiment as a lot of optimism about the economy coupled with much uncertainty about the future because there is an expectation that inflation will have a long tail that has yet to be fully absorbed.
- Drivers of inflation remain mixed.
- Wage inflation is one key driver, particularly in the services sector, with employees expecting higher wages to keep up with inflation. (this is not slowing down presently either! https://www.reddit.com/Superstonk/comments/127pdic/inflation_alert_the_feds_preferred_inflation/)
- Firms that want to retain talent in a tight labor market anticipate salary increases of 5-9% next year.
- Council members reported double-digit increases in insurance costs, with some insurers exiting markets along the Gulf Coast.
- Supply chain issues persist and are another significant contributor to inflation, particularly in the manufacturing and goods-producing sectors.
- The drought in the Midwest and the low Mississippi River levels also contributed to a supply chain backup of both agricultural commodities moving downstream to export markets and raw materials moving upstream for manufacturing and agricultural production. (we have talked about this previously: https://www.reddit.com/Superstonk/comments/zzh5jx/inflation_alert_from_the_transportation/)
- This had a strong effect in several Districts that are reliant on the upper parts of the river.
- Council members also highlighted lingering effects of supply chain issues— some of which were caused by labor shortages—from the pandemic on construction.
- Some areas are experiencing a shortage of concrete and electric transformers (with one-year wait times).
- The apparent randomness of these shortages is likely contributing to further uncertainty among households and businesses.
- In other cases, Council members noted that some firms have realized that they are able to maintain margins by raising prices.
- Council members reported that auto dealers still have strong pricing power with high prices and little negotiation.
- Most businesses are passing a high percentage of cost increases downstream to consumers, which generally was not the case last year.
- However, Council members have observed early signs of a potential shift in this dynamic. For example, market-dominant retailers such as Walmart and Target are now pushing back on vendors, seeking justification for further price increases.
- The most acute effects of inflation are being felt in rural and lower-income areas, with higher gas and diesel prices squeezing the wallets of consumers and businesses, particularly smaller farm operations and other industries that use diesel-fueled equipment.
- While prices for some commodities (such as aluminum and lumber) have fallen, that softening has often been offset by higher transportation costs.
- Prices for trucking and transportation have declined but remain high—and those higher prices are being passed on to consumers.
- The Council also reported that some consumers and businesses have become more focused on interest rates than inflation, which has resulted in real estate sales and development and capital expenditures being compressed by the higher interest rates.
Housing: How have home prices changed in recent months? Have there been any changes in overall housing activity in Council members’ Districts?: - Strong demand coupled with low inventory have kept home prices stable.
- However, price appreciation has slowed or even declined somewhat in parts of the country.
- Buyer activity has slowed down as mortgage rates have increased.
- Council members reported that the days of frenzied buying are over.
- Buyers are taking more time, and homes are sitting on the market longer.
- However, conditions have not returned to pre-pandemic levels.
- The shortage of available homes continues to constrain the market for buyers.
- Many homeowners sitting on sub-4% mortgage rates are essentially locked into their homes and will be unwilling to sell their home if it means that their next mortgage will be near 7%.
- This shortage has had cascading impacts across markets. Housing remains unaffordable for many low- to moderate income and first-time homebuyers who are now locked into the rental market.
- While multifamily construction has been strong, Council members reported that rental rate increases continue to exceed overall inflation in many markets.
- Housing shortages are also impacting the upper end of the income distribution in some markets. For example, Council members noted that some hospitals are having challenges filling vacancies because of a lack of housing suitable for higherincome health professionals.
- Multifamily construction has been so strong that some Council members reported that municipalities have had to tap the brakes on new developments because municipal infrastructure cannot keep up.
- Meanwhile, single-family construction is slowing as builders finish their existing projects without lining up new ones because profit margins are too narrow or unpredictable to justify new builds.
- Buyers are choosing to purchase larger homes instead of ordering premium finishes and features that in the past have increased profit margins for builders.
- There is some variability by region. In-migration from high-cost-of-living metro areas into rural areas has driven up costs in those rural areas while urban areas see softer prices.
- In a mixed bag, some Districts reported fewer institutional investors and house flippers buying up properties, while others continue to see an influx of investors for multifamily housing based on strong demand (and increases in rental rates.
Labor Markets: How have the labor markets in which Council members operate changed in recent months? In particular, please assess the degree o f job loss or gain (and, in which industries). Please comment on the changes to wages that Council members have observed over the pastyear.: - All Council members reported that increased labor costs and the labor shortage are affecting both their financial institutions and their business customers.
- The labor shortage is a primary concern of bankers and a major driver of inflation. Businesses that are not raising their wages fast enough to retain workers and attract new ones are losing their employees to other firms.
- There was broad consensus that several industries, such as the healthcare and daycare industries, are facing more severe shortages.
- Shortages in these sectors are having broader impacts.
- With fewer options for daycare or eldercare, more prime-age workers are being forced to remain on the sidelines.
- In some parts of the country, daycare now costs nearly $500 a week, which is typically much more than what many young employees with children make.
- The price and availability of daycare will remain a major barrier for labor force participation.
- Even manufacturers with capital and contracts in hand cannot find workers to fulfill the contracts.
- Council members noted that the labor shortage is not transitory and will be a reality for businesses into the longer term.
- The decline in labor force participation has been a long-term demographic trend exacerbated by the pandemic and the transmission path of inflation to wages.
- Council members also noted that employers are still digesting the (1) ability for workers to work remotely and (2) increased participation of younger generations in the workforce that have different views, compared to older generations, of their relationship with work.
- Several Council members noted an increased desire for immigration reform to offset the structural shortage of labor.
- The opioid crisis was also named as a key driver of labor shortages in some areas, and a major causal factor in many geographies with the lowest labor force participation rates.
- Most businesses remain hungry for labor.
- In reaction to these pressures, Council members reported increased investment in equipment to make up for labor shortages across sectors.
- However, Council members also reported the beginning of layoffs in some markets in their region, which is a harbinger of a slowing economy.
Consumer Confidence: Are Council members seeing any signs o fimproved (or declining) consumer confidence? What is the outlookfor consumer credit losses?: - Council members reported a disconnect between consumer behavior and reported confidence.
- While inflation has reduced confidence, consumers are still spending.
- However, increases in spending on services has been hampered by labor shortages in that sector.
- The consumer confidence divide is vast between the “haves” and “have nots”
- For those on the upper end of the income distribution, folks are complaining but still spending.
- There is greater confidence among consumers with higher levels of discretionary income, who, as a result, feel insulated from rising prices.
- Holiday spending, possibly driven by pent-up demand, is expected to remain strong for these consumers. Purchasing activity may not fully reflect consumer pessimism.
- For low- to moderate-income households, rising utility bills and food prices have eaten into both their savings and purchasing power.
- Energy prices are a major concern as we enter winter, and the cost of heating oil is a concern in the Northeast.
- It was estimated that for minimum wage workers, 70% of their money goes to essentials (e.g., food, energy, transportation). Lowerincome households are cutting back on discretionary spending, and in many cases, they are being forced to make difficult choices about which monthly essentials they can afford.
- Council members reported that consumer delinquencies remain minimal but are starting to slowly creep up.
- Most institutions expect losses to increase in 2023.
- Some Council members have observed significant deterioration in the mobile home portfolio and others have observed some weakness in auto loans.
- While delinquencies remain relatively low, lower used-car prices have resulted in losses for repossessed autos.
Deposits: What changes have Council members seen in local deposit markets? Describe these changes by segment (retail, small business, and corporate). What are Council members' expectations with respect to deposit levels?: - Some Council members reported an outflow of deposits on the commercial side, but most Council members have not yet seen a significant decline in their consumer deposit base.
- However, consumer deposits are expected to run off soon, following a strong growth during the pandemic.
- Deposits have been surprisingly sticky even as nonbanks offer higher interest rate CDs and money market accounts to attract deposits.
- Banks have not repriced deposit rates in parallel with the rapid rate hikes of the Federal Reserve, and Council members reported wide variability in the degree that banks have raised deposit rates.
- Marketing, social media, and consumer pressures are expected to contribute to an acceleration of deposit pricing pressures.
- Council members noted that differences in bank deposit rates stem from how institutions managed the excess liquidity gained during the pandemic.
- Banks that more aggressively deployed deposits into investments are now competing for deposits to maintain liquidity, while banks that invested less aggressively are now sitting comfortably at current deposit levels.
- Council members expect deposits to continue running off in the future, partly due to higher rate alternatives but also because of higher levels of spending as a result of inflation.
- Personal savings rates have fallen significantly and are currently below their pre-pandemic levels, though Council members did report an outflow of deposits into treasury bonds and brokerage accounts.
- Businesses are using their cash to pay down their lines of credit that have much higher rates now and are drawing down commercial deposit levels.
Potential FHLB borrowing limitations and Cryptocurrency: - Council members expressed concern about the ability of community institutions to continue to borrow from Federal Home Loan Banks (FHLBs) over the short term.
- Council members discussed current balance sheet trends, where most institutions saw a significant inflow of deposits during the pandemic and invested the funds in safe assets, such as treasuries and agency securities.
- Council members are also concerned about the impact the rate hikes are having on their bond portfolios, and, by extension, the increase in unrealized losses that flow through to tangible capital. Under Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) regulations, banks whose tangible capital becomes negative must receive written permission from their primary federal regulators to roll over or utilize new advances.
- Council members noted that bank capital regulations were updated almost 10 years ago to ensure that bank capital is (1) robust, (2) reflects modern banking and markets, and (3) can withstand stress during adverse economic and financial market conditions.
- Council members discussed the downside of using tangible equity, rather than regulatory capital, as a proxy for a bank’s health because the latter is a much more robust measure of risk.
- The Council requested that the Federal Reserve engage in communications with the FHFA and other banking agencies to avoid the risk of an administrative reduction in the ability to borrow from FHLBs, triggered by an exclusive focus on tangible capital, when an analysis of regulatory capital does not indicate the need to reduce FHLB borrowing.
- Council members reiterated their concern that compliance regulations will adversely affect how banks are lending in their communities, both in terms of product variety and innovation and in lending volumes.
- Council members discussed the continued fight against cybercrime and other scams, noting that the types of fraud are changing as criminals are getting smarter and more strategic.
- Council members feel that these are national issues that are not just affecting community depository institutions and large depositories.
- Council members believe that in addition to the fraud prevention practices they are employing, more should be done at the federal level to educate consumers.
- Council members continued to recommend that efforts be made to help community institutions streamline their due diligence process for shared vendors.
- In addition, the Council recommended further development of federal outreach programs designed to increase customer awareness of fraud and cybercrime.
- Council members reported that there have been many recent news stories related to increases in fraud in Person-To-Person (P2P) payment networks.
- They stressed that the fraud is real, and efforts should be made to mitigate risk and reduce depository institution and consumer losses. Council members noted that changes to Regulation E have been proposed.
- Currently, Regulation E provides protections for consumers for unauthorized transactions. There have been proposals to have the CFPB reinterpret Regulation E to include “fraudulently induced but authorized transactions.”
- This would protect consumers who are tricked into paying fraudsters.
- The payments are then authorized by the consumer, who later has second thoughts and wants to retrieve their funds.
- Expanding Regulation E in this manner would affect all consumer payment platforms, but especially P2P services where a lot of this fraud occurs.
- Increases in Regulation E liability could have a stifling effect on bank and credit union adoption of faster payments, including FedNow, due to the increased expense and lack of provisions for offsetting revenue to cover the risks.
- Financial institutions may slow down implementation, stop adoption, or even abandon existing P2P services. Some proposals suggest shifting liability to the receiving bank in these types of transactions, but that would also have a chilling effect on faster payments adoption.
- Right now, joining one of the faster payments networks in “receive only” mode is considered a safe way to get involved in faster payments, without fear of fraud risk.
- Shifting the liability from consumers to the receiving financial institution makes it less likely that the institution would participate in a faster payments network.
- Council members discussed recent developments in the cryptocurrency markets.
- There is strong interest in making these markets subject to robust regulations equivalent to what exists in the United States for securities and derivatives.
- Council members were agnostic about which agency—the CFTC or SEC—is authorized by Congress to conduct oversight.
TLDRS: There is a TON to take in here but the bullets called out above: - Council members reported stark differences in economic impact between the “haves” and the “have nots.”
- Council members generally reported that inflationary pressures remain strong, with prices rising rapidly.
- Despite rising prices, customers and businesses have not yet pulled back on spending.
- Council members summarized sentiment as a lot of optimism about the economy coupled with much uncertainty about the future because there is an expectation that inflation will have a long tail that has yet to be fully absorbed.

The Herald reported this week that Trade Me’s private equity owners, London-based Apax Partners, were looking to sell it off, eyeing a preferred partial dual-listing on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges. Apax bought Trade Me in early 2019, paying $2.56b - $6.45 a share - to take it private. 2023.03.31 20:22 Alektho 1995 Chevy G20 Starter?
Hey all, my ‘95 Chevy g20 has been harder and harder to start lately. It cranks and cranks, but the engine doesn’t want to turn over. Usually once I get it started it’s fine for the rest of the day, but in the last week or so it’s been hard to start even after I’ve just driven it. Today I went out to start it and it cranked for just a second, then nothing. No crank, no click, no start. Battery is fine. Here’s my question: would I be stupid just to go ahead and try replacing the starter? I ordered a new starter and I will pick it up after work, but I don’t want to waste my time if there is a good chance it isn’t the starter. So, what are my likely odds here? Is it one of those things where it could be ANYTHING and I’m almost certainly going to end up back at the auto parts store tonight? Or is it more likely than not going to be the starter? I’m fine giving it a try as long as my odds are better than 50/50! TIA

Letters of Recommendation I'm not going to give a numerical rating because that is extremely arbitrary
-AC Algebra II teacher - Was the most vocal student in the class, known as the curve buster, only freshman in a class full of sophomores and juniors. Teacher is very eloquent. Have maintained somewhat of a relationship with him.
-World History teacher - was not my best performance grades-wise, but I submitted a project on the French Revolution that he cited as the "best presentation he's ever received." Also had a close relationship with him as we'd discuss shows and email each other memes.
Interviews Georgetown - Interviewer was an alum of my high school. That being said, I blundered the "Why Georgetown" question and asked him about Greek Life not knowing that all the fraternities at Georgetown are off-campus.
Penn - Connected well with my interviewer. He was in Greek Life which was good because I plan on rushing so we talked about that. He knew my internship employer due to corporate connections and I recognized the parking lot his office building was in through his window because my doctor's office is there. Nothing crazy but certainly solid.
Essays I've always been a strong writer, perfect grammar and good diction. I spent months on my personal statement, although I could've done more with it looking back. I thought my supplementals were very strong and I was able to recycle topics for most schools, so I didn't spend a whole ton of time on each individual supplemental because the ideas were mostly already fleshed out, I just had to relate them to the school and my aspirations there. Mostly wrote about my deceased trainer who was my role model and how he inspired my fitness EC that is dedicated to him.
Personal statement was about self-acceptance with my Tourette syndrome, and how through perseverance and optimism I was able to push through the depression and anxiety that accompanied it and gain full control of my emotions and most control over my motor, which has caused my tics to subside.
Wrote extenuating circumstance essays when available about sicknesses, as I missed months of school in both junior and freshman year (200 excused absences each) which affected my grades.

2023.03.31 19:37 autotldr Net zero strategy shows UK will miss 2030 emissions cuts target Climate crisis
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 76%. (I'm a bot)
The UK government has said it is still on track to meet its international climate commitments under the Paris agreement, as analysis of its energy plans suggested more drastic policies would be needed to make the required carbon cuts.
The government's analysis shows that its new policies will meet only 92% of the emissions cuts required and, without further changes, the target will be missed.
At the heart of its strategy is the UK's legally binding requirement to reach net zero emissions by 2050, and its commitment under the Paris agreement to a plan - called a nationally determined contribution, or NDC - to cut emissions by 68% by 2030, compared with 1990 levels.
Within the dense pages of analysis and recommendations, the official assessment of the NDC stood out: "We have quantified emissions savings to deliver 88 megatonnes or 92% of the NDC. We are confident that the delivery of emissions savings by unquantified policies detailed in this package will largely close this gap and the government will bring forward further measures to ensure [it] will meet its international commitments if required."
A spokesperson for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero told the Guardian: "We remain committed to delivering our international commitments, including the 2030 NDC under the Paris agreement which we fully expect to meet. We are on track to deliver our carbon budgets, creating jobs and investment across the UK while reducing emissions. Our carbon budget delivery plan is a dynamic long-term plan for a transition that will take place over the next 15 years, setting us on course to reach net zero by 2050.".
Dr Daniel Quiggin, a senior research fellow at Chatham House, said onshore wind could bring greater real emissions reductions than removing emissions from the air via carbon capture technology.
